Meads collection. This book presents the earliest illustrations and descriptions of Pacific peoples and cultures as they were observed and recorded on Captain James Cook's third and final voyage (1776-1780) with HMS Resolution and Discovery. The broad spectrum of subject matter includes landscapes and people from Pacific areas such as Hawai'i, Tahiti, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Northwwest, and Russia. Also pictured are the activities of Pacific peoples, such as entertainment, sporting events and religious ceremonies. The stamps also display important artists, scientists, cartographers, and navigators plus their scientific instruments.
