520			_aBrief Description These diaries deal with a critical period in the history of modern Jerusalem at the end of Ottoman rule. They include the author's observations on daily life in the city and its suburbs, including religious and secular celebrations and exciting events, such as the introduction of electricity, the automobile, the phonograph and the cinematograph, and the people of Al-Baqa'a welcoming the first Ottoman plane to land there. The diaries also document the author's life as an officer in the Ottoman army, his military service at the Dead Sea, and his relationship with prominent figures in the city, such as Hussein Al-Husseini. The diaries also cover the fabric of life in the neighborhoods of Sa'diya and Musrara. The book includes dozens of historical photographs from the Jawhariyya collection and important appendices that document various aspects of the social and economic system in Jerusalem during this important period. Thus, we see that these diaries are not only modern in character, but also depict a city entering a phase of modernity. The book contains a music CD that includes musical pieces, sung and played by Wassef Jawhariyya. About the author Waseef Jawhariyya, musician, oud player and historian, was born in Jerusalem in 1897 and died in Beirut in 1973.
