In Ibn Rushd in the Mirrors of Modern Western Philosophy, Ashraf Mansour examines how the Islamic philosopher Ibn Rushd (Averroes) is viewed through the lens of modern Western philosophical currents, and how his thinking relates to contemporary debates. The author explores Ibn Rushd’s method of engaging with Greek heritage—especially Aristotle—and how he compared, critiqued, and adapted ideas in light of modern philosophical topics such as reason, religion, morality, politics, rationalism, and empiricism. Mansour also draws connections and contrasts between Ibn Rushd and Western thinkers such as Hegel, Kant, Descartes, Spinoza, and Darwin, showcasing where their ideas converge or diverge, and in some cases how Ibn Rushd seems to anticipate or parallel certain Western foundations.
