The old welfare policies, such as free education and subsidies on essential goods, were part of the Nasserite socialist project in the 20th century and were admired by the generations of the 1940s and 1960s. Over time, however, these policies became subject to criticism, and the state adopted alternatives like privatization, rationalizing public spending, and reducing the number of subsidy beneficiaries. The book aims to explore the origins of the old welfare model, analyze the reasons for current criticisms, and assess some of the new policies and their social impact
