Photography’s Orientalism is a collection of essays that explore how 19th- and early 20th-century photography helped shape and sustain Europe’s Orientalist vision of the Middle East and India. The volume examines both European and non-European photographers working in these regions, showing how photographic practices were entwined with colonial, touristic, and ideological imperatives. It investigates how images of the “Orient” were constructed, circulated, consumed, and contested. Contributors: Ali Behdad, Luke Gartlan, Christopher Pinney, Mary Roberts, Nancy Micklewright, Esra Akcan, Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, Hannah Feldman, Rob Linrothe, John Tagg.
