Summary: Throughout his life, James Lee Byars built a myth around himself, weaving himself into a continuous performance that made him one of the most mythical and provocative figures in art in the second half of the twentieth century. This volume, published on the occasion of the exhibition James Lee Byars ½ an Autobiography, was conceived as a compilation of archival material, a partial inventory of casual photographs and performance documentation; of clever and anecdotal CVs that succeed in unifying the artist's art and life; press releases from the period, invitations to exhibitions and personal letters; postcards and official correspondence with various institutions that not only give an account of Byars's thoughts on the event of his artistic work, but also make it manifest. These images are accompanied by a series of conversations that art historian David Sewell recorded with the artist in Los Angeles in 1977. These interviews, published for the first time in this book, offer a new way of understanding many of the artist's key concepts and projects.
