Subject(s): Summary: Published on the occasion of the Singapore Pavilion, La Biennale di Venezia in 2017, featuring the work of Zai Kuning. 'The 57th Venice Biennale sees the Singapore Pavilion seeking to uncover untold stories and forgotten histories of a people whose culture has influenced what is recognised as "Southeast Asian" today. Multi-disciplinary artist Zai Kuning, in his presentation of Dapunta Hyang: Transmission of Knowledge, retraces the 7th century voyage of Dapunta Hyang Sri Jayanasa, depicted in this installation as the first Malay King of the Srivijayan Kingdom. Confronting audiences as a symbol central to the exhibition, is the skeleton of a ship — made only of rattan, strings and wax, juxtaposed against an interpretation of the lives of the orang laut, sea people of the Riau Archipelago.' - extracted from the foreword by Paul Tan Preface by Lin Shiyun and Tamares Goh. Artist biography included.
