RAW Academy is an experimental residential program for the research and study of artistic practice and thought and curating. The program generally takes place over seven weeks in Dakar. It invites dynamic reflection on artistic research, curatorial practice and critical writing. Two separate sessions take place each year in spring and fall. Session 10 takes place in Cameroon at Doual'art for a duration of 5 weeks from October 2 to November 3, 2023. In a world where the marked distinction between the public sphere and the private sphere has never been more than a simple concept, RAW Académie Session 10 Repères goes beyond this dichotomy to explore the way in which art in an urban environment allows a reconciliation between personal aspirations, the general interest and collective imaginations. The contemporary African metropolises from which this program originates are often fruitful, sometimes conflicting, meeting points of these interests. Widely studied, often criticized, strongly fetishized, the African city is not a simple “laboratory”. It represents more than 600 million lives on a continent that stretches some 8,000 kilometers from north to south, where the sun rises and sets every day across six time zones. Located in Douala, Cameroon, our field of investigation during Repères will consist of works of art, projects and spaces that use the urban environment as raw material to enter into communion with life, with the beats of the heart. and the dreams that constitute the city's ultimate rhythm and strength.
