Fragile City brings together four kinds of materials: photographs from Charles-Edouard Jeanneret ( The future Le Corbusier) and August Klipstein's Voyage d'Orient from 1911; photographs by David Berge from 2011; a selection of quotes from Elke Krasny's curatorial research in 2011; and essays by Tulay Atak, David Berge, and Elke Krasny, which reflect upon this body of material. By bringing these materials together, we are aiming to weave an understanding of the urban where one form may relate to another in a multiplicity of ways, across spaces and times, texts and images. Fragile City revisits Le Corbusier’s Voyage d’Orient of 1911 in the contemporary context of urbanization. In dialogue with local experts in Athens, Belgrade, Istanbul, Rome and Vienna, Le Corbusier’s formative route was re-contextualized in contemporary terms. Atak’s contribution is an essay on Le Corbusier’s photographs as documents of an urban context corresponding to a moment at the end of imperialism and beginning of nation states. With these essays and photographs, Fragile City is a visual, critical and historical reflection on contemporary urbanization.
