"تضافرت ظروف عدة، في التاريخ السياسي كما في الاقتصاد والثقافة، لتعلن ولادة ""الأمة ـ الدولة"" في العالم العربي، وتوطّدها.
في المقابل، لا تزال الأفكار السياسية السائدة منشدّةً إلى وحدات سابقة على ""الدولة"" ربما كانت ""العروبة"" أبرز تعابيرها.

هذا الكتاب محاولة للتدليل على عمق الأثر الذي باتت الدولة تخلفه على الحياة المعاصرة للعرب في بلدانهم، وعلى مدى الضرر الذي لا يزال يلحقه تلكؤ الأيديولوجيا القومية عن اللحاق بالواقع.

حازم صاغيّة كاتب ومعلّق لبناني. كتبَ في السياسة والثقافة العربيّتين، وصدرت له مؤلَّفات عدّة عن دار السّاقي، منها: ’البعث السوري‘، ’في أحوالنا وأحوال سِوانا‘، ’هذه ليست سيرة‘، ’نواصب وروافض‘، ’بعث العراق‘، ’نانسي ليست كارل ماركس‘، ’هجاء السلاح‘."

"Several circumstances, in political history as well as in economics and culture, combined to announce the birth of the “nation-state” in the Arab world and to consolidate it.
In contrast, prevailing political ideas are still drawn to units that preceded the “state,” of which “Arabism” was perhaps the most prominent expression.

This book is an attempt to demonstrate the depth of the impact that the state has had on the contemporary life of Arabs in their countries, and the extent of the damage that the failure of nationalist ideology to catch up with reality continues to cause.

Hazem Saghieh is a Lebanese writer and commentator.
