| Summary, etc. | Exhibition catalog. Sep-Nov 2006. Essay by Nancy Adjania. For Kallat, the fragmented body has been a site for exploring issues of identity, belonging and nationalism, in turn referencing the geo-political body of a nation created in the wake of fragmentation. In the exhibition 'Rainbows of Refuse', she furthers this exploration by addressing contentious issues such as those of aggression perpetrated by a nation under the guise of security and defense. The universality of such a state and its local relevance, the historical precedence and its immediate presence, are only a few of the juxtapositions that she sets up in her work. These impel the viewer to look closer and reassess their original impressions. The beauty of the objects chosen is belied by their implicit violence. There is a resultant irony that runs throug her work and leaves the viewer acutely aware of the fragility of the human condition in the face of oppressive political forces at play. |
