505 ## - FORMATTED CONTENTS NOTE
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The book presents the Jewish presence in Egypt from the time of Muhammad Ali until the end of King Farouk's era when the number of Egyptian Jews did not exceed seven thousand. With modernization during Muhammad Ali's reign and that of Ismail, foreigners, especially Jews, began to flow into Egypt. They found fertile ground for investment and wealth under mixed courts and foreign privileges. Most of them did not seek Egyptian citizenship, which was available at the time. Jewish companies dominated lending institutions, real estate banks, textiles, transportation, construction, and more. Their numbers reached 60,000 in the early 20th century, yet there was no widespread anti-Jewish sentiment either against individuals or as a creed.
