"Brief summary<br/>The Jawhariyya memoirs have a special and distinctive value because they simultaneously reveal, ridicule, and celebrate a set of social practices, some of which are ordinary and routine, and some of which are hidden and impermissible. Disclosure, then, is the secret to the value of the memoirs. We see the memoirs focusing on the hidden side of the private lives of Jerusalem’s notables and dignitaries, on the behavior of the Ottoman and British elites, military and political, and on the scandals and heroism of ordinary people in whose embrace Wassef Jawhariyya was born and raised. They turn the ordinary and routine into a miraculous scene. They allow us to see it with new eyes. During the Great War, new social patterns and practices emerged in urban life. They crystallized during the Mandate period. Initially, famine, epidemics, and mass exile combined to bring about radical changes in the social fabric of several urban centers. In Jerusalem in particular, new courtyards appeared outside the walls of the Old City that embraced these new values.
