| Summary, etc. | Art Deco was one of the most significant styles of our time, but also of the entire history of decorative arts. Originating in France in the years of great cultural effervescence preceding the Great War, the movement spread rapidly throughout Europe, and experienced spectacular developments in the United States. Cubism and Constructivism, Futurism and Egyptomania, the Ballets Russes and the Bauhaus have all left their mark, among many other factors, on an aesthetic illustrated by such famous names as Ruhlmann, Poiret, Sonia Delaunay, Eileen Gray, Jean-Michel Franck or Puiforcat. The masterpieces of the period include the famous perfume bottles by Lalique as well as the chic and icy images of Tamara de Lempicka or the decor of the ocean liner Normandie. Alastair Duncan's concise and detailed study offers the reader a panorama of the period and an encyclopedia of its artists, as well as a manual for the student, the collector or the simply curious. |
