This book explores the rugged paths of the past of "Al-Mankab Al-Barkhi" and ways to uncover its various twists and turns, whether in terms of methodology, field of research, or nature of sources. The book raises methodological problems with Mauritanian history, whether in relation to the nature of sources or methodological induction and historical interrogation. Political history received a generous share of this book's treatment of the nature of the princely system in the Emirates, and the Emirates' relations with European immigrants in general and the French in particular. Social history was given a great deal of attention through the chronicling of the judicial plan in Mauritania in the past, and military life in Mauritania before colonialism. Cultural history was the final touchstone of this historical approach, as it dealt with the role of pilgrimage trips in cultural communication between the two sides of the desert in the 19th century, and scientific and spiritual connections.
