The history of Syria during the last days of the Ottoman rule, the following few years of independence and nation-building, occupation by France under League of Nations mandate, and freedom from them towards the end of the 1930s as a consequence of the Second World War. Why did Syrian political life continue to be dominated by a particular urban elite even after the dramatic changes following the end of four hundred years of Ottoman rule and the imposition of French control?
